“AUDIOBOOK” is an instrumental album created by improvisational jazz musician Sam Gendel and visual artist Marcella Cytrynowicz, released by Psychic Hotline.
The album consists of 13 alphabetically-named tracks and corresponding illustrations that feel like dispatches from outer space, or unearthed ancient runes. At points melodic and cartoonish and at others glitching and somewhat unnerving, it’s a visual work and instrumental album rooted in a strange in-between, in a shadowy and vivid chasm between terrestrial and otherworldly.
We conceptualized, designed, and developed a virtual reality experience that displays all 26 art pieces and 13 songs together in an immersive digital space.
Our aspirations for this project were two-fold: to provide an immersive, meditative space for visitors to engage with the album and to present the collaborative work in a way that—through the flexibility of digital media—cannot be experienced elsewhere.
The project was designed and built from the ground up in Unity, utilizing FMOD Studio for spatialization and audio-reactivity, and deployed using the WebXR toolchain.
